FIVE criminals were shot dead by police on the Copperbelt in a firefight that occurred on the outskirts of the Kasumbalesa border area as they staged a robbery.

The five are ex-convicts who were on police’s most wanted list for robbery and robbery offences.

The five residents of Kitwe have been identified as Vincent Mwila, John Mwansa, Kizito Bwalya, Gift Tembo and Gift Mubili.

Copperbelt Police Chief Peacewell Mweemba, who confirmed the incident, said the sixth criminal armed with an AK-47 rifle was on the run.

He said the incident happened yesterday at 4:00 p.m. in the outskirts of Kasumbalesa border area.

“Brief facts are that the Anti Robbery Squard received a tip from members of the public that there was a group of armed criminals driving an unregistered Toyota Surf who wanted to stage a robbery wanting to steal a Toyota Fortuner ADE registration number 1001. The agents followed up and after reaching the outskirts of the Chililabombwe region, the criminals spotted the agents and identified them,” he said.

Mr Mweemba said that in the process there was an exchange of fire between the police and the five suspected criminals were shot while the sixth who was allegedly armed with an AK 47 rifle managed to flee in the Bush.

“A black pistol was later recovered from the five men who were shot and the unregistered Toyota Surf has since been recovered and parked at the police station. The five men were later identified by officers who had previously arrested them for various offences,” he said.

He added that the five are ex-convicts who were on the wanted list for the offenses of motor vehicle theft and aggravated robbery in the Copperbelt province.

“The bodies have since been deposited at the Kakoso Hospital Mortuary,” he said.
