Academic Affairs announces new department, director: UNM Newsroom


UNM Senior Vice-Rector for Academic Affairs Barbara Rodriguez announced the creation of a new office and director within the Department of Academic Affairs. The newly created Academic Staff Office (OAP) is now operational under the leadership of Emily Luhman, who took office on July 19.

“I am delighted to welcome Emily Luhman in Academic Affairs, as Director of the Office of Academic Personnel,” said Rodriguez. “Emily brings an impressive set of skills, including extensive expertise in human resource management, faculty policies and practices, and a demonstrated commitment to supporting academic departments in recruiting, hiring and retaining diverse faculty and faculty. highly skilled. She is energetic, knowledgeable and customer service oriented. Recognizing that this position is of paramount importance to our faculty, Provost Holloway and I are confident that Emily will provide exceptional leadership.

Under the direction of the Senior Vice-Rector for Academic Affairs, the Office of Academic Personnel (OAP) serves as a central service center for administrators and faculty. It specifically supports the recruitment, selection, appointment, promotion, retention and supervision of a diverse and highly talented faculty within the academic units of the main campuses and branches of UNM.

Prior to the Office for Academic Personnel, Luhman recently worked in the Client Services Department within the Human Resources Division. She has over 15 years of experience in human resources and higher education, including supporting the University’s faculty during her tenure in the Office of Faculty Affairs and Services.

Luhman received a Bachelor of Science from the University of Wisconsin-River Falls, a Masters of Education from Rutgers and is a Certified Senior Human Resources Professional. Raised in Minnesota, she moved to the Albuquerque area in 2013 and enjoys spending time with her dogs, camping, and enjoying all of New Mexico’s outdoor recreation opportunities.

“I am delighted to be chosen as Director and look forward to developing the Academic Staff Office, enforcing the terms of collective agreements and working in partnership with the campus community to best meet the unique needs of the faculty, ”Luhman said.

The Academic Staff Office is the base of support for faculty and will partner with University management and academic administrators to implement employment strategies that advance UNM’s missions and initiatives. In addition, the office will support the recruitment, advancement and retention of UNM faculty, work with faculty and administrators to interpret policies on appointments, leaves, and other aspects of university life.

OAP and Luhman will also oversee the UA-UNM collective agreements, ensuring their compliance while building relationships with employee representatives and UA-UNM management.
