Duke University, USA, offers a course on TikTok to help build a career around social media

With social media platforms no longer limited to mere socializing, even universities have started to recognize their potential for growth in the near future. Duke University in the United States offers TikTok courses as part of its “Building Global Audiences” course.

With the introduction of the course, Duke aims to teach undergraduates the skills to optimize their social media presence and build successful brands around it. The course helps students amass significant followers on social media platforms like Instagram and TikTok and familiarizes them with the potential of these digital spaces.

According to Duke University’s website, the course is a “collaborative, experiential workshop” that expands students’ knowledge of social media marketing. In the course, students are tasked with working on two tracks, namely individual creators and teams. They then reflect and develop social networks. media strategies, create goals and even design editorial calendars to maintain social media pages.

Additionally, participants also study other successful content creators and take notes to apply the strategy to their pages. With this, students engage with each other and update their classmates on progress and metrics while providing valuable feedback and ideas for improvement.

The Building Global Audiences course is taught by Duke University Innovation and Entrepreneurship Instructor Aaron Dinin. According to Dinin, he was a senior in college when Facebook was born. He pointed out that initially the platform seemed useless to him, but now admits he “may have been wrong”.

University students get the most out of the course and use it to better master social media. For Ben Chipman, 23, who is studying sociology, the course is helping him with his “self-designed marketing and brand development program”. Other students work on their YouTube channel or blog page while using the knowledge acquired during the course.

Highlighting the power of social media, Professor Dinin said students are realizing the massive reach they can get through these platforms just by sitting in their dorms. He insisted the classes aren’t just about making someone famous on TikTok, but about creating a space where students can “think about leveraging social media to help make the world a better place.”
