East Midlands Railway recruits train drivers in Nottingham and Derby

The East Midlands Railway (EMR) operator is recruiting apprentice train drivers at its Nottingham and Derby depots.

Apprenticeships are open to people of all ages and from all backgrounds, but applicants must be over 21 years old.

The program lasts 12 months and combines theory and practical classroom work with the development of practical skills covering activities such as taxi rides and visits to signal posts.

Classroom instruction will take place in world-class facilities at the EMR Training Academy. Here, classroom learning is enhanced by state-of-the-art virtual reality, which replicates real-life railway situations.

A cabin simulator is also available, which allows apprentices to learn to operate trains in a variety of different situations and conditions, all in a safe environment.

EMR values diversity and is committed to ensuring equality throughout its organization. In line with these values, it encourages applications for the roles of women, youth and ethnic minority groups.

Paul Griffin, Conductor Manager for EMR, began working on the railroad in 1995, said, “The role of a train conductor is unique and challenging, but rewarding.

“I have held many positions within the role of driver, from central train driver to driver mentor and depot manager. I have been in my current position as Head of Drivers since August 2019. ”

Kate Holden, Director of Human Resources at EMR, said: “At EMR we currently employ just over 600 drivers and to successfully deploy our fleet we need drivers to run the trains on the train. network.

“One of our main challenges is to encourage a more diverse driving workforce. We strive to increase the number of women applying for our driver positions, with open evenings specifically aimed at women, as well as tackling unconscious prejudices through blind screening.

“We encourage applications from applicants of all backgrounds and ages, and we urge anyone interested in a career in one of these driver roles to check out our website. “
