Tech recruiters hit by layoffs seek work elsewhere

What’s more, gig companies don’t seem too worried about a new rule proposed by the Labor Department and a preview of top HR managers’ concerns for the coming year.

Technical recruiters are not OK

Tech recruiting is a tough business right now. The industry layoffs have hit recruiting and HR teams harder than any other, and laid-off recruiters say they are struggling to find full-time work in tech.

Tech companies that have made layoffs this year have cut about half of their human resources and are hiring staff, according to a new analysis from the interview simulation site interviewing.io.

  • Sifting through spreadsheets of terminated employee names and job titles posted on Layoffs.fyi layoff tracker, the interviewing.io team estimated that companies eliminated 50% of their recruiters and 48 % of their HR employees during layoffs this year. .
  • Fired recruiters told me that those estimates don’t seem too far off. Carol Raymer, a seasoned recruiter who recently lost her job at DocuSign by laying off 9% of its employees, estimated that 40% of her colleagues lost their jobs. (In a statement to Protocol, a DocuSign spokesperson said the percentage of HR and recruiting roles that were affected were “significantly lower than reported industry averages” and were “by a similar percentage to other departments” of DocuSign.)
  • Another terminated recruiter, who asked to remain anonymous so as not to hurt her job search, said about half of her team was laid off during the startup’s recent layoff.

Some recruiters kept their jobs for months, even after hiring slowed. Tim Nelson, who was laid off after six months at DocuSign along with the rest of the company’s procurement team, said he was “turning [his] inches for four months” before finally being released.

  • “I was just told not to source,” Nelson said. “I completely understand why I was fired. I’m not bitter about it.
  • Nelson started his own side business as a recruiter when DocuSign all but stopped hiring, he said.
  • After recruiting work dried up when it started, the company put recruiters “on a mission” to help out in other departments, the unnamed person said. “I thought that was a really creative way to try to keep us busy because a lot of those departments have lost staff as well,” she said. “But I think it was ultimately not enough [work for us].”

Many laid-off recruiters are now struggling to find full-time employment in the industry. For some, the best option may be to take a significant pay cut to go into non-tech companies.

  • Raymer said some of his peers are considering roles that pay 30% to 40% less than they earn in tech.
  • Nelson, who said he joined DocuSign for the generous parental leave policy — which he won’t be able to use when his baby is born in January — has found no comparable opportunity in tech recruiting.
  • “I applied for at least 50 positions,” Nelson said. He’s waiting for an offer from a company he spoke to recently, but “there’s no way I’m going to get what I have at DocuSign,” he said. Some tech recruiting opportunities seem to be geared toward candidates who live close to the office, Nelson said, which is limiting for him as a DC-area resident.
  • The recruiter who wished to remain anonymous said she was “a bit hesitant” about joining another VC-backed startup “given what happened.” Her network has been an indispensable resource for referrals, she said. “If I were to apply now for a position that matches what I’m looking for, I’m usually one of the 500 applicants,” she said. “I feel bad for people who don’t have access to a solid network.”

Gig work issues

Uber, Lyft and DoorDash all made statements last week suggesting they weren’t too worried about the Labor Department’s proposed rule that would reclassify some gig workers as employees, according to protocol reporter Hirsh Chitkara. The rule would reintroduce test factors from the Obama era, such as whether the work is core to the employer’s business.

Lyft released a statement that this change was expected since President Biden took office, and DoorDash said the rule would not change its business model. Uber pointed to the fact that its industry has grown “exponentially” under Obama. The responses from some industry groups, Hirsh pointed out, are more alarming than others.
