Vance Co. Schools Announces Leadership Changes


September 21 – HENDERSON – Schools in Vance County recently announced several leadership changes

John Suther has been appointed Chief Financial Officer. He has been the Assistant Director of Finance for Vance County Schools for the past eight years. Suther has 17 years of accounting experience. In 2016, he was certified by the NC Association of School Business Management Academy as a Certified School Business Director. He graduated from NC State University. Suther resides in Henderson with his wife Joy and their two children.

The current Vance County Schools Payroll Supervisor, Cathy Kidd, will serve as the Assistant Finance Officer. Kidd has worked in finance for over 25 years, including 19 years in public education. She resides in Weldon with her daughter, who is currently a student at UNC Chapel Hill.

Current CFO Jennifer Bennett holds a position with the North Carolina Department of Education. Suther and Kidd will both take up their new roles effective October 15, 2021.

Dr. Jennifer Carraway, the current Director of Student Services, has been appointed Executive Director of Human Resources. Carraway has been with Vance County Schools for four years. Carraway has been in the education business for 27 years. She graduated from Barton College and received her Masters and Doctorate degrees from the State of North Carolina. She resides in Henderson with her husband and two children and is a proud alumnus of Vance County Schools. Carraway will begin his new position with immediate effect.

Detrius Jones is the new Deputy Director of Human Resources. She has 13 years of experience in licensing and human resources. She lives in Raleigh with her two children and took up her post in August.

Cyrus Waters has been appointed Director of Advance Academy. Waters has been in the education business since 2003. Waters has served as a Technical and Vocational Teacher, Special Populations Coordinator, Deputy Principal and Principal of Gaston Middle School in Northampton County. Waters is a graduate of Shaw University and also received two graduate degrees, one from Gardner Webb University and the other from Andersonville Theological Seminary. Waters will begin following the upcoming retirement of Acting Director Mark Lawhorne.
